Most review sites rate software for enterprises. We built our ratings for teams like yours — small, busy, and budget-conscious.
Big review sites like G2 and Capterra collect thousands of reviews, but most of those reviews come from large companies. A tool that gets five stars from a 500-person company might be completely wrong for your 10-person team.
On top of that, many platforms inflate their scores — where a 7 out of 10 is considered “average.” That makes it almost impossible to tell the difference between tools that are truly great and tools that are just okay.
We built our rating system to fix that. Every score on STOA Tools is calibrated for small businesses, uses a honest scale where 5 actually means average, and focuses on the things that matter most to teams your size.
Every tool on STOA gets a single rating from 1 to 10 — but that number is actually a weighted average of five separate scores. Here is what we measure and why.
Is it right for a small team?
We check whether a tool is priced for small businesses, easy to set up without a dedicated IT team, and built for teams of 2–50 people — not just scaled down from an enterprise product.
Can your team learn it quickly?
We look at the learning curve, how clean the interface is, and how quickly a new team member can get started. If your team needs weeks of training, that matters.
Is it worth what you pay?
We compare what you get for what you spend. That includes the free tier, the price jump when you grow, and whether the features you actually need are locked behind expensive plans.
Does it play well with your other tools?
We check how many native connections a tool has, whether it works with automation platforms like Zapier or Make, and whether you can connect it to the rest of your workflow.
Can you count on it when you need help?
We look at uptime reputation, how responsive their support team is for small accounts, and whether the company is stable enough that you can count on them long-term.
A score of 5 means a tool does its job. A score of 9 means it's best-in-class for small teams. We keep the scale honest so you can actually tell the difference.
Every tool is scored by AI using a strict rubric — the same rubric, applied the same way, for every product. This is not a popularity contest. A tool does not get a higher score just because more people have heard of it.
The AI evaluates each tool across all five dimensions based on its actual features, pricing, setup process, and support quality. No tool pays for placement, and no tool gets special treatment.
We also calibrate our scale intentionally. On most review sites, a 7 is “average.” On STOA, a 5 is average. That means when you see a tool rated 8 or 9, it genuinely stands out — and when you see a 4, you know there are better options out there for your team.
Once you add your current tools, we give you a personal Stack Health Score from 0 to 100. Think of it as a report card for your tech stack — showing you where things are working and where there is room to improve.
How happy you are with each tool you use
How many of your key business tasks are covered
How well your tools connect with each other
Whether you are paying for overlapping tools
How well your spending matches your budget
How prepared your stack is for AI-powered workflows
The more information you share — your tools, your satisfaction with them, your budget, and your priorities — the more accurate your Stack Health Score becomes.
We don't just show you the same “top 10” list as everyone else. Your recommendations are personal — and they improve the more you use the platform.
Tell us your industry, team size, and what your biggest challenges are. We use that to give you a smart starting point — even before you browse anything.
As you bookmark tools and browse categories, we learn what matters to you. Your recommendations get sharper with every interaction.
Once you have tools saved, we look for gaps in your workflow and find tools that connect with what you already use — so everything works together.
When you first sign up, a quick setup (about 5 minutes) gets you most of the way there. We ask about your industry, team size, biggest challenges, and the tools you already use.
Over time, you can add more details — like your budget, how comfortable your team is with new technology, and which business areas matter most. Every piece of information makes your recommendations, your Stack Health Score, and your AI advisor conversations more relevant to your specific situation.
Our scores come from an objective rubric, not from sponsorship deals or advertising revenue.
The same five dimensions, the same scale, the same AI rubric. No exceptions, no special treatment.
