Asana is a work management platform for planning, organizing, and tracking projects.
Asana is one of the most well-rounded PM tools for SMBs. The $10.99 Starter packs AI features and a workflow builder competitors charge double for. Main downside: per-user pricing climbs fast.
Plan and track projects using list, board, timeline, Gantt, and calendar views
Connect daily tasks to company-level goals
Automate workflows like approvals and task assignments — no code needed
Use Asana AI to summarize projects, draft content, and identify risks

n8n's Asana node creates tasks, updates statuses, assigns users, and reads project data. Small teams use it to auto-create an Asana task when a support ticket is opened or a form is submitted, removing the manual step of copy-pasting work items across tools. You can also close tasks automatically when upstream events resolve.
Install the free Clockify browser extension (Chrome or Firefox) and a 'Start timer' button appears inside every Asana task automatically — no manual linking needed. When you click it, Clockify picks up the Asana task name and project as the time entry description, so you never re-type anything. You can stop the timer from any Clockify surface — browser, desktop app, or mobile — not just from inside Asana. Clockify also tracks subtasks, not just top-level tasks, so teams doing detailed work breakdown get accurate numbers. If a project in Clockify has the same name as the Asana project, the extension auto-selects it; you can also let the extension create matching projects and tags in Clockify on the fly. After work is done, jump to Clockify's web dashboard to edit entries, see a breakdown by project or client, export timesheets, and calculate billable amounts if you're on a paid plan. Data flows: Asana task name and project → Clockify time entry description and project (one-way, on timer start). Time totals stay in Clockify only; nothing writes back to Asana. Pain points: The integration relies entirely on the browser extension, so time tracked in the Clockify desktop or mobile app won't show a button inside Asana. If Asana updates its UI, the extension may temporarily break until Clockify ships an update. The extension is open-source, so fixes can lag. Clockify's paid-plan rate and billing features are not surfaced inside Asana itself.
Via Zapier, you can create Asana tasks from new Airtable records (or vice versa), turning Airtable into a data intake layer and Asana into the execution layer. A common small-business setup: your Airtable base holds client records, content items, or order entries — when a new record is added, Zapier creates an Asana task in the right project so your team knows to act on it. You can also run the flow in reverse: when an Asana task is completed, Zapier updates the corresponding Airtable record, giving you a running log of finished work in your database. Setup involves connecting both accounts in Zapier, choosing a trigger (new record in Airtable or new/completed task in Asana), mapping fields like record name to task name and notes to description, and activating the Zap. Multiple pre-built Zap templates are available for common patterns including subtask creation and due date syncing. Data flows: Airtable record fields (name, notes, due date) → Asana task fields (name, description, due date), and optionally Asana task completion status → Airtable record update. Bidirectional via two separate Zaps. Pain points: There is no true real-time two-way sync — each direction requires a separate Zap, and updates in one tool do not automatically update the other unless you have both Zaps active. Zapier polling means changes take up to 15 minutes to appear on free plans. Field mapping is manual and must be re-configured if you add new fields to your Airtable base. Airtable's native automations can now do some of this without Zapier, but they lack the same depth of Asana action options.
HubSpot workflows auto-create Asana tasks from CRM triggers. Deal info and campaigns appear as widgets in Asana tasks.
The Asana for Slack integration (built by Asana, installed from the Slack App Directory) lets your team turn Slack conversations into tracked work without switching tools. Any Slack message can become an Asana task in seconds: hover the message, click More Actions, and choose Create Task in Asana — you fill in the project, assignee, and due date right in Slack. The /asana slash command also lets you list, create, complete, and comment on tasks from any channel. You can link a Slack channel to a specific Asana project so that the channel automatically receives notifications when tasks are created, completed, reassigned, or when due dates change. On paid plans, Asana AI generates task summaries inside Slack when you paste an Asana link, and a Smart Chat feature lets you ask questions like 'What's blocking the launch project?' and get answers from Asana data without leaving your conversation. Asana Rules (available on Starter plans and above) let you trigger custom Slack messages automatically when preset conditions are met, such as posting to #design when a task enters the 'Review' section. Data flows: Bidirectional. Slack messages flow into Asana as tasks or task comments. Asana task events (creation, completion, assignment changes, status updates) flow into Slack as channel notifications. Pain points: Notification noise is the most common complaint — linking active projects to busy channels can flood them with minor updates. The native integration has no built-in intake flow for complex requests requiring approval before task creation; teams with that need typically add a workflow tool on top. Asana AI features in Slack (task summaries, Smart Chat) require a paid plan on both Asana and Slack.
Notion and Asana connect in two distinct ways, and it's important to understand which one you're setting up. From Asana's side, you can link existing Notion pages directly to Asana tasks so collaborators see relevant documents alongside their work, and you can use Asana Rules to automatically create a new Notion page whenever a task hits a specific trigger — for example, auto-generating a research notes page when a task moves to the 'Interview Scheduled' section. From Notion's side, you can paste any Asana project or task URL into Notion, select 'Paste as database', and Asana tasks will populate as a Notion database with their properties — but this is a one-time import snapshot, not a live sync; changes made in Asana after the import do not automatically appear in Notion. For genuine real-time two-way sync (where an edit in Asana instantly updates the matching Notion page and vice versa), you need a third-party connector such as Unito, which maps fields bidirectionally and handles task creation in both directions without duplicates. Data flows: Primarily one direction depending on which feature you use. Asana Rules push task events into Notion (creating pages). Notion's database import pulls Asana data into Notion at a point in time. True two-way live sync requires a connector like Unito. Pain points: The built-in Notion import from Asana is a one-time snapshot — it does not stay in sync, which surprises many users who expect live updates. Asana Rules that create Notion pages only flow in one direction (Asana → Notion) and require at least an Asana Starter plan. Full two-way sync via Unito or similar tools adds cost and setup complexity.
